A Designer's Guide to Specifying Custom Rugs for Projects

A custom MAJLIS rug sized under a dining table in a brick loft project interior.
A rug specified to the plan keeps a project space in proportion.

Specifying a custom rug gives an interior designer or architect full control over size, shape, color and performance. For residential and hospitality projects that control matters. This guide walks through how to specify a custom rug that fits the room, the brief and the budget.

Why Specify a Custom Rug

Off the shelf rugs come in set sizes and set palettes. A custom rug removes those limits. You can match a floor plan exactly, pull a color from the scheme and choose a pile height that suits the traffic. The rug becomes part of the design rather than a compromise. For open plan rooms, suites and lobbies a made to measure piece almost always reads better.

Choose the Shape and Size

Start with the plan. Decide whether the room calls for a rectangle, a round, an oval or a faceted shape, then set the exact dimensions. Leave enough rug around seating and dining areas so the furniture sits correctly. When a room has an unusual footprint, a custom size keeps the proportions clean. If you need a refresher on layout, see our guide on choosing the right rug size.

Select Materials That Perform

Match the material to the room. For high traffic areas choose a fiber that resists crushing and stains. MAJLIS rugs are made in ECONYL regenerated nylon, which is strong, takes color well and carries a sustainability story that many clients value. Plan for Lead Times

Custom work takes time, so build it into the schedule. Share the final size, colorway and quantity early, then confirm samples before production. A clear timeline keeps the rug on track with furniture, millwork and install dates. When you plan ahead, a made to order rug arrives without stress.
