Hospitality Rugs for Lounges, Hotels, and Private Clubs
How to size, color and plan rugs for hotel lobbies, lounges, bars and private clubs so they guide guests and still look good after heavy use.
In a hotel or club, a rug tells guests where to walk and where to stay. Size each one to a seating group, pick a color that forgives traffic, and settle the cleaning plan before the order goes in. The rest of this guide works through a typical property one zone at a time.
Reception and the arrival sequence
The first rug a guest meets usually sits between the door and the desk, and it takes the heaviest traffic in the building. Keep it clear of the entry matting zone, which should be a dedicated walk-off product, and start the decorative rug once feet are mostly dry.
Size it so the line from the door to the desk runs straight across it. A rug that only catches one corner of that route gets worn unevenly and becomes a tripping point where luggage wheels catch the edge. A lower pile helps here too. Our standard is 14 mm, and we can go down to 10 mm where carts and cases roll across.
Lounges and bar seating
Lounge rugs do most of the atmospheric work in a hospitality interior. The common mistake is to place one modest rug in the middle of a large room. Large fields read better: one rug per seating group, each big enough that every chair and sofa has its front legs on it, with 18 inches or more of floor between neighboring groups so staff can move through with trays.
At a bar, keep the rug away from the counter itself. Stools are pulled in and out all evening, and spills land closest to the bar. Start the rug where the lounge seating begins and let hard flooring take the strip along the counter.
Private rooms and member spaces
Private dining rooms, libraries and card rooms in a club see fewer people and longer stays. This is where a deeper pile or a richer color makes sense, since the rug is felt as much as seen. A dining room rug still needs to extend at least 24 inches past the table on every side so chairs stay on it when pulled back.
These rooms also benefit most from the acoustic softness of a large wool rug. Hard walls, stone floors and a long table can make a small room loud very quickly.
Colors that forgive heavy use
Mid-tones and deep colors hide daily wear better than very pale ones. In our Intense collection, Brick, Oud, Saddle and Midnight Blue all look rich under low evening light without showing every footprint. Chalk and Oyster are lovely in a guest suite, where traffic is light and housekeeping is daily.
A border helps too. The Thick collection places a calm center inside a broad border in a second color, and in a lounge that border frames the seating and gives the rug a clear edge. Lapis / Brick and Oud / Horizon both suit warm, low-lit rooms.
Check every color under the actual lighting scheme. Hospitality lighting is often warm and dimmed in the evening, which pushes reds toward brown and can make blues look nearly black. Review samples on site at both daytime and evening settings.
Planning the order around opening day
Made-to-order rugs need lead time in the program. Ours typically arrive in the US 4 to 6 months from order confirmation, and each quote includes a delivery estimate, so samples should be approved well ahead of fit-out. Confirm the flammability and code requirements for your jurisdiction with the project team before you finalize the fiber, and include a cleaning schedule in the operations handover.
